Cognizantability - The conquest of the mind by HH Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami

Reading this part from Merging With Siva (MWS) book written by His Holiness Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami remarkably had a profound impact to my understanding the intricate working of the brain. I wanted to confess here, though I had read this part some years ago, I'd never able to digest completely, but after going through a few cycle of reading now, the understanding is blossoming slowly for my conscious mind to accept as confusion starts to dissolve in facing clarity with the help of superconscious mind..

THE CONQUEST OF THE MIND

THE TRUTH
WHAT ARE YOU TO THE MIND
YOU ARE NOT IN TRUTH
WHAT SEEMS - ISN'T
WHAT COULD BE - CAN'T
WHAT APPEARS TO BE IS NOT ENOUGH
EVEN TO BE APPARENT,
FOR THE SEERS IS WHAT HE SEES,
--AND ISN'T  IN TRUTH

BY SATGURU SIVAYA SUBRAMUNIYASWAMI, AUGUST 4, 1959

In this Chapter of Cognizantability, Gurudeva explains in detail the Five States of Mind:

1. Conscious
2. Subconscious
3. Subsubconscious
4. Subsuperconscious
5. Superconscious

Supported with aphorisms and their explanation of their interrelated five states of mind. A perfect learning treatise on how to control our mind, going deep inside of our "core being" and awaken the dormant "Self" to higher consciousness level.

Garden by the Bays - Snap shot by Paramacharya Sadasivanathaswami

Panorama mode photo shot using iPhone by Paramacharya. Although unable to meet Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami at Changi airport for dinner because we need to rush back to Malaysia before midnight. Sis Vasantha has a medical appointment the following day in Kajang, but I am so glad to meet Paramacharya and Saravanathaswami once again.

Dr. Maruthu, Sister Vasantha and I travelled to Singapore eagerly wanted to meet Satguru and all the monks who made a short, 1 1 /2-day stop-over in Singapore, after Innersearch Mauritius before proceed to Hawaii. Our objective is to hand over prayer item to the monks to be carried back to Kauai monastery. Dr Maruthu and Sis Vasantha drove down to Melaka a day before our journey to JB. Packing were done before midnight. Our travel to JB begins at 8.00 am from Klebang.

It was a beautiful trip. Our car in-travel conversation surrounds of Gurudeva's teaching. We had an enthusiastic discussion  on awareness and meditation. We're so engrossed on our discussion, we ran out of fuel at the Skudai highway, near Murugan temple. A time to catch up to clear JB CIQ is by 12.00 nn. Dr Maruthu and I quickly ran down to Petron station, leaving Sis Vasantha in the stalled car. It was her first experience having car run out of fuel ( good anubava for her: -) ) We walked about 2 kilometres and drenched walking under the hot sun. It was fun in the sun!!

Not deterred, we managed to reach JB town by 11.45 am and parked our car at Metro. We decided to take a cab to Singapore as the best option, as we are carrying substantially heavy luggage. The sprawling majestic JB CIQ would be a heavy task, taking into consideration of having to scan and then hurrying down to catch-up bus to Singapore CIQ and then to Kranji MRT.

Taxi is the best option. We got one; the fare is RM15/ person and it will be all the way to Rochor Road, near Little India. Each of us carried "2 bags." Dr Maruthu suggested  lunch at Tekka Road. So, we walked again all the way to Komala Villas. Another few kilometres of walking! We're happy though, cheering and talking of sadhana practice.

After lunch, we recouped our energy and took MRT to Bayfront from Little India. We walked another few kilometres to GBB, flower garden. I I'd never walked considerably a long distance in many years! Kind of mini "Paatha Yatra." I was totally soaked and drenched! Perfect, we reached 3.30pm.

The walkabout with Swamis and Sadhakas is at 4.00pm. Refreshed ourselves, we repacked into one carton and handed over to Singapore devotee. Our sadhana is done!! We're so happy that all went well. We enjoyed the walk and the joy to be with the monks just overwhelmed us!

The trip back was quite smooth, We had a quick dinner at a vegetarian restaurant in China Town. a 45 minutes MRT ride from Clarke Quay to Kranji and then hopped on Causeway  link bus back to JB City Square. Drove and reached Melaka at 1.30 am the next day. Short, sweet and wonderful evening and  a lot to talk-about journey. We'll be sure to reminisce our experience sometime later when we meet again!

Jai Kailasa Parampara.

Trust and being true

My simple thought

Trust and being true

Simple word but contains strong values when we enter into any meaningful relationship. Now, the question begs, “Why trust is so important in any relationship?”

Before answering this question lets us ask another important question, ``Why are we so passionate on trust?”

We know that a bond can be created at any level of communication and acceptance between two or more individuals who regard social interaction as one of the key factors for being in high spirits.

Trust agrees us to have a significance association with others. We have a greater sense of security accepting as true compliance that something is what it appears to be. It means we have the aptitude to be open, confide our heart, and put our life on someone’s hand without a second thought.

We know beyond shadow of a doubt that the person we trust will be there in any circumstances. We place reliance on something in the future. We place high confidence on the person(s) integrity and ability to honor any conformity made in any mode or manner, e.g. spoken words of assurance, promises made and care for another.

How we can be assured trust can be relied and depended upon on whom it was placed? It is an intricate question, sometimes can be very confusing even to the psychologist because trust relies on inconclusive evidence. It is just an assurance feeling one can experience. You have to really put to test the trust with faith, a hunch sensation where your inner conscience may guide you.

Put it this way. Take the trust into our day to day life and scan through the pages of our past experiences where you had confidently placed your trust on someone you so strongly believe would care enough to hold to it no matter what happen to them or to you. You will be surprised to know that the majority, 90% of them almost certain had failed you!

The problem with “people” is, they usually tend to forget what they had said previously to you. Blame it on circumstances or nature of human basic fight or flight behaviour, psychologist tend to excuse them because the brain is naturally wired to protect the individual to flee from any situation seemed not favorable. Simply put, FEAR FACTOR. This is natural animalistic tendency as to why trusts are usually broken.

“ If I can’t handle or accept a new situation which I perceive have given me a clue to decide that trust may longer be necessary to be uphold, the best thing for me to decide is to ignore all promises made previously.” Free will preferences made unilaterally disregarding the negative consequences and impact of that decision to the other person(s) where they had initially placed their trust.

Humanistic values rely heavily on ethics of trust and to be true to words or promises, whether it is implied or explicitly defined in any form of communication or action. Spiritual values too speak highly about this virtue; a must possession to built strong positive character and wisdom as we grow older.

Yes, I do agree, off course trust always begins with self.

Visiting Sri Sakthi Ashram (SSA), Tangkak

Among the numerous spiritual places in Malaysia, there is one remarkable location  that a many may not have known, even amongst Hindus in Malaysia - Sri Sakthi Ashram. This Ashram is situated a few kilometers away from Tangkak township. Tangkak can be accessed by PLUS highway, towards the south (see Tangkak-Segamat exit signboard along the north-south highway, heading south). You would definitely love this place when Mount Ledang sets as the backdrop view of Sri Sakthi Ashram (SSA).

Kausalya, my sisters daughter has always been attracted to this ashram after attending "sadhana camp" couple of years ago. She has been persuading my sister for another trip for prayers and visiting the spiritual Guruji who is responsible establishing SSA. (please clink the above link for further detailed information). I drove down to Tangkak via Bemban and Jasin link road. It's about 40 minutes drive from Ayer Keroh.

I've been to SSA before but noticed ashram had gone through some major changes. Ganesha's huge murthi was placed at the front of the ashram. The walkways are covered with non-slippery tiles. "Sapta Kanni" shrine is the latest attraction. Remarkable place to visit for prayers and checkout with the organization in areas that you could contribute.

Grand Dad

Rare picture of late grandfather, Athimulam with my cousin, Devika. He "ran away" from his native country, India with many other Indians for greener pasture. Malaya was their chosen destination. Britain was Malaya's colonial master then and they had brought in thousands of indentured workers into rubber estates, tin mines, railways and employed the educated Indian immigrants into civil and public administration  because they knew the Indians are hard working lots. Grandfather joined Public Works Department as a trucker at an early age.

Grandad married in his teens, a common practice in Indian families of yesteryears and blessed with eight children. He had managed to raise his children to be in good standing in the society. Education was strictly stressed to all of them at an early age.Hardly finished his primary school back in India, he educated himself at a very much older age. He reads and writes Tamil language fluently. He picked up national language, Bahasa Melayu pretty fast.

A very disciplined man throughout his life, grandfather was a respected person among his peers. Truly a thrifty and penny wise, he would never spend unnecessarily. Grandfather is a master of 3R concept, reuse, recycle and reduce. Nothing goes to waste. He would collect all the discarded "usable scraps" and give them a new lease of live. His Malay friends referred him as "Ayah," meaning father as mark of respect.

My fond memories of my beloved grandad will always be cherished in my mind forever. He lived well, helped needy people, provided "soft loans" (chetti) with reasonable interest to many who need immediate hard cash out of pity for them although he was not keen. Grandad wished that I studied medicine. He wanted me to become a Doctor, but I did not manage to fulfill his wishes due to circumstance and unfavourable condition back then. Now, I vowed to myself that at least a Ph.D. or Doctoral as a compensation, least he would be happy seeing me completing the highest post-graduate studies. It is just a step away now.

Grandpa may your soul rest in peace or all the best in the current life you're in. I know you're watching and blessing us. We really miss and love you.

Swami Sivaprabanandaji visiting Melaka

His Revered Sivaprabhananda Swamiji

Swamiji is picking up a fallen mango fruit. Reverend Swamiji is a keen observer and  stores vast treasures of spiritual knowledge relating to Sivananda Swamiji of Rishikesh. One could just sit down and listen for hours to his talks and never a moment without mentioning HH Swami Shanthanand Saraswathi's "magical wonders," in his earthly days. HH Swamiji Shanthanand had initiated Swamiji into "sanyasa" order a few decades ago.We are honoured to have the presence of reverend Sanyasin Swami Prabhanandaji gracing sister's home in Melaka. Swamiji is a resident monk of TFA(JB); a disciple of Swami Shantanand Saraswathi. It was such an honor and blessing to have His Holiness as our spiritual guest and god.  Thank You Swamiji.

Sister welcomes  by "washing Swamiji's feet" and followed by "arathi": as a formal Hindu gesture of respect inviting a monk into home. Traditional and ancient Hindu practices are still alive even though modernism engulfs over every aspect of our daily life. It was told that when a holy person comes visiting any home, He graces the house with the entire Gurus of His reverend's lineage would be present. Such a remarkable blessings we had.

Best ever pilgrimage - Innersearch 2002 @ Kauai, Hawaii

In 2001, for the first time in my life, I met HH Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, affectionately known as Gurudeva in Senbaga Vinayagar Temple, Singapore. HH singled out me from a distance of few meters away with his powerful crystal clear sparkling eyes and a lovely smile akin a parabolic radar rotation scanning an unidentified object, locking into its frequency.

After HH speech, we queued up for blessings and books signing event; when my turn came, to my utter astonishment, Gurudeva spontaneously asked,"Ravichandran, You've been waiting all this while to see me. Come to Kauai." How do Gurudeva recognize me? HH had never met me in person before that, except we had corresponded few times!! Amazing!!

Prior to that, I had another profound experience of His Holiness inner light, so powerful that I had totally lost my consciousness when Gurudeva stood at the temple hall entrance. It was a blissful moment. Tanjung Katung was drizzling and many flying insects just before HH arrival. The moment Satguru stood out from the car, all of a sudden the rain immediately stopped, flying insects were gone and I saw a powerful light emanating from HH body. I lost in Gurudeva's pure white light. This event sets historic life-changing transformation and changed my path towards spirituality and Sanathana Darma. Saivism as my way of life thence on. Jai Gurudeva!

As predicted, I went to Kauai's Kaduval Temple pilgrimage the following year. Met Gurudeva just before HH great departure and once again in the year 2002 for the Innerseach with Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami.

Persistence and patience always pays off!

The highlight of the convocation event was graduation snapshots with family members. Here I am with my sister, Athi Letchmi and her family, together with brother-in-law's close friend at WOU, Penang last year. I am quite saddened amid in the jubilation of finally graduating MBA because mother wasn't there! I was choked in disappointment momentarily thinking of mum's absence due to her serious illness. However, I took some comfort after talking over the phone, seek her blessing from afar.

Life offers different experiences to different people. They're so important to make us learn, grow and mature; accepting all events that cross our path,  good or bad. Never doubt in our ability for a single moment that failures teach us to appreciate and draws strong positive attitude, be humble, simple and pliable. Every single failure in our attempt to reach our life goals and objectives is so necessary. It strengthens our resolution, persistence; never-give-up attitude till the last battle is over.

Nevertheless, this is not over yet, I've one more hurdle to finish fulfilling a childhood dream; the chapter has not closed yet !!
